I have seven computers in my classroom. One is equiped to produce CD's and
video tapes. We have one to three computers in every classroom and large labs
on each hall. That is the situation in every classroom k-12 in our district.
Our students are pretty computer literate by the time they reach us. Even so
there is a required for graduation course in our district to make sure that
they don't graduate without at least proficient skills on the computer. We
have all of the Adobe products on our network. I have some programs that are
particular to my classroom such as painter, 3d studio max, lightwave, etc. I
teach them whatever they need to add to their skills and the software. I also
use peer tutoring and collaborative learning. They take their own pictures
most of the time. Very seldom will you enter my room and see every student
engaged in the same task at the same time. For example. During Art I time I
also have two to three Animation II students working independently.
I have written a Perkins grant to add 5, more powerful cpu workstations, a
turn key video editing workstation, digital camcorders, more digital cameras,
traditional cameras, traditional darkroom equipment, a disublimation (sp)
printer, more copies of 3d studio max, etc., to upgrade our multi-media
capabilities. I would like to take this opportunity to ask everyone on this
list to cross their fingers at least once this summer while these decisions
are being made.
It is not that I am technology oriented. I teach a full palette of
traditional media also. I am a painter myself. I just believe that students
should learn as much as possible about it all. Then when they make choices,
they will come closer to making the best ones for them.
