Ted-
-I have my 6th graders doing a project in 3D with paper mache. Its usually a
simple one such as a box w/top and handle which then is painted and
shellaked. I have done frogs, fish, shoes and hats. I allow 2 weeks for this
project from start to finish. The other 3 projects are 2 D. Thats all I
have time for-depending on what time of year- sometimes I only get in 3
projects total-but there are other assignments such as a one page creative
writing about a selected painting. Sometimes I read them a story and they
are to create a illustrated cover to the story. There is just so much we
have to expose them to in a short amount of time. I have several shorter
assignments that directly pertain to my lecture/discussions.
7th graders are introduced to relief sculpture. They do not do anything
in 3D. I have workd with plaster and foam plates. Very messy and "fragile".
The project they liked most was the FOIL relief. Design is built up using
scraps of cardboard (railroad board). A layer of rubber cement is placed
down and covered with aluminum foil (heavy weight). students press, outline,
and right into the foil. After, a coat of India ink is painted over the
entire piece, it is gently wiped off in a circular motion to reveal details
of the piece. It is a sure success! Guarenteed. doesn't take long (it
takes longer to prepare the materials).
In the past my 8th graders also did a paper mache project that was the
"part 2" of a 2 part final project. Students had to research a selected
artist and write a report on Him/Her. Then they would have to create
something (for instance a goblet or a place setting of dishes) in the style
of their artist. This assignment is also highly successful! I do not worry
about the quantity of projects. If the class is behaves poorly, we wont do
any projects! (but will do many written assignments- I can teach both ways.)
We start teaming next year so our schedule changes a bit (45min classes a
day for 9 weeks) If you are currently teaming and could give me some advice
or suggestions -I would surely welcome it!!!
Thanks Kathy
