I am a high school art teacher and agree with you that computers can and
should function together in today's visual arts curriculum. The art careers
today are, for the most part, combining traditional art media with computer
technology. There is a big demand for people who have art skills and computer
skills. Many are being hired from overseas.
A lot of wonderful art teachers today are reticent about getting involved
in anything to do with computers. They have established successful teaching
methods and besides, a lot of the computer applications have high learning
curves, especially for people who are starting out. Who wants to invest all
that time and money into it when we are already so busy?
So, KSchiavo, in response to your e-mail of the reference, I don't think
you're barking up the wrong tree. Your 8th graders will get exposed to
computers by you and they'll begin to ask and push for more computers and
computer classes when they get to H.S. I say do your thing, and don't worry
about what other successful art teachers are doing.
