I have used this book for making a plaited basket with my 7/8 crafts class.
The book suggests coregated cardboard but I use large pieces of tag (24" x
36"). First I have the kids paint the tag with tempera using at least 4
colors and 5 patterns (very arbitrary, just to give them a goal). When dry
we cut into 1 1/2" strips. I like the book because I could adapt their step
by step instructions pretty easily into written directions for my students
to have in front of them for reference. The kids like how a square base
turns into a round container. When the weaving is done and before the top
edge is put on, I bring out the fancy cutting scissors, the crimpers and
hole punches and have them cut down their extra strips and weave through the
areas for more texture and interest. Two years ago (the first time I did
this project) I had each kid make two-the first one we did the whole class
together and they took home. The second one I would not answer questions but
asked them to read the written instructions on the handout for themselves.
The second one we stuck a few sheets of bright tissue paper in and attached
a safety-kut hand printed card to and each kid gave to a different teacher
as a thank you. They still sit in classrooms- I like to think brightening
    the place.
