I avoid the "T" (talent) word like the plague in my high school classes. I
don't want to provide an excuse for anyone who thinks he or she is without
it.( and the overwhelming majority do). I agree with many of you who have
said that it all comes down to motivation and desire. I had a young man in
my ceramics class who could create the most incredible sculptures almost
effortlessly. The other students viewed him with awe. However, he rarely
finished any of his pieces, failed to turn in his research paper( final exam
grade) and did not do any homework assignments. What has he done with his
"talent"? He did not fulfill the requirements of the class and it did not
seem to bother him in the least. Grades did not mean much to him. He did
tell me at the end of the year that he was moving out of his home, getting
an apartment and working 3 jobs to pay for it. Then, I understood where his
head was at. I do believe he will be successful someday in some sort of
creative field, but only when he decides to invest effort and hard work in
his endeavors. Many people who know his work would be very surprised to find
out that his grade was far lower than the majority of other students in the
class who exhibited much greater drive and dedication.
